"Trying to educate the young without help and support from the home is akin to trying to rake leaves in a high wind." P. Gough

Ada Speaks - Parents Workshops

Children need parents who are friendly adults in their lives. Children do not need parents who are their best friends. Messages from home that are clear and consistent provide the foundation of emotional security from which a healthy sense of self-esteem and competency may emerge.

Seminars for parents include:

The Parent and Teacher Partnership

Parenting is a journey. No one is more important in a child's life than their parent. Teachers provide important snapshots of education into the picture album of a child's education. The collaborative effort of educating a child needs to be based on trust and patience. This seminar will offer a variety of perspectives and techniques to assist those adults most important in the education process. Children require acceptance and recognition. Establishing spaces where children feel they belong is important for the positive development of a sense of self worth. Adults need to model and encourage responsible behavior, problem solving skills and value the sharing of feelings. The session will end with a careful look at those who interact with children and how their daily lives need to include moments of celebration.

Building Family Strengths that Make a Difference

There are some traits that healthy families share. A careful consideration of these will provide guidelines to help establish and maintain critical emotional connections for and to one another. One should not have to wear armor in our own homes. What ways may we safely share our feelings, fears, hopes and accomplishments? How can each of us encourage a sense of togetherness that establishes a base from which family members may develop self-competency, self-discipline and self esteem? A careful look at shared family events and their importance will provide us with insights that will be more durable than T.V. and VCR shared moments.

Parental Shift vs. Parental Stuck

Parents are their children's most significant teachers. Messages that parents give their children often last a lifetime. Although some days go slowly, the years fly by and it is important that parents make thoughtful decisions about family rules, expectations, communication patterns and everyday messages at the kitchen table. Clear messages about belonging, rules and relationships are part of a parent's job description. However, the challenge for parents is to recognize the need for parent shift to best meet the child's growth and development thereby encouraging self-discipline and self-confidence. As children grow and change, the parents roll must shift. Children outgrow their pajamas. They outgrow rules and limits too. Parents gradually progress from protectors to key adults who assist and guide in the child achieving his or her potential. Stuck parenting assumes that what works for a four year old is effective with a school-aged child. Stuck parenting leads to struggling families.

Additional workshops on many other topics are available. Please contact me to request or suggest other seminars.
