Research
supports that parents are the
most significant teachers in
a child's life. A child's value
of education and lifelong learning
is also impacted by teachers,
caregivers and outside influences.
School staff is powerful when
it comes to promoting and welcoming
parent involvement both in the
school and in the home. When
parents and teachers establish
clear, open and frequent two-way
communication, setting shared
goals and encouraging at home
learning, students can achieve.
Parents are adult learners who
want what is best for their
children. Parents seek guidance,
support and suggestions to assure
student success. Parents can
create a school smart home.
Educators need to establish
home smart schools.
The following are some of the successful seminars held in schools for parents.
Necessary for Success - A Shared Vision of Parent Involvement
Professionals can be instrumental in building relationships with parents and their
children. Marion Wright Edelman states
we need to empower parents. There is
no substitute for home and for parents.
We need to help parents to succeed so
that their children will succeed. In
order to be successful, knowledge of
adult development and the adult learner
is critical. This workshop will combine
facts, insights and strategies to help
establish learning environments that
are safe and respectful.
The School-Home Partnership: A Necessary Relationship for Success
Parenting is a journey. No one is more important in a child's life than a parent. Teachers provide important snapshots of education into the picture album of a child's education. Parents, however, are responsible for the picture album. The collaborative effort of educating a child needs to be based on trust and patience. Adults need to model and encourage responsible behavior, problem solving skills and value the sharing of feelings. How teachers include parents substantively directly relates to a student's academic success.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent/ teacher conferences are necessary and too often challenging. Research supports the direct relationship between home support and student achievement. "Everyone says the parent-teacher conference should be pleasant, civilized, a kind of dialogue where parents and teachers build alliances," Lawrence-Lightfoot observes. "But what most teachers feel, and certainly what all parents feel, is anxiety, panic and vulnerability." Too often these conversations result in missed opportunities. Clarification of what promotes a positive working relationship as well as strategies helpful in establishing clear job description expectations will support staff that is instrumental in welcoming parent involvement.
